Working on Lily

March 5th, 2008 | Posted by Davey in Pre-Travel Posts - (1 Comments)

On Saturday we went to pick up our campervan (Lily) from the farm where she is stored.  Having been pretty busy for the previous few months, we hadn’t seen or used her since last September. Expecting the worst, we went armed with jump leads and a tow rope – needless to say – we didn’t need either, she started with the first turn of the key.

Upon inspection it became evident that the long winter days and nights out in an open field were starting to take their tole, severe rust had set in under the windows and in many of the panel seams. Having never done any body shop DIY before, I seen it as a major challenge, another string to the bow if you like, and set about having a go myself.

I spent the whole weekend grinding, filling, priming, spraying and finally t-cutting.  There wasn’t enough time left to do the waxing and polishing, maybe next weekend. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves – no close ups.  Sam meanwhile gave the inside a full valet.

She is not near finished, I am working on her each night until it gets dark. We are away camping for Easter weekend, so we have a few weeks. Once all the t-cutting is finished, I’ll give her a good wax and polish – more on that next weekend no doubt.

The rugby

March 4th, 2008 | Posted by Davey in Pre-Travel Posts - (0 Comments)

Following our meal the night before and having had a slight thick head we got ready and headed off to the rugby.  Sorry I have no photos, knowing the potential state I could be in, I decided it best to leave the camera with Sam.

We had a great day trawling the pubs and knocking back the finest pints of stout I’ve drank in a long time.  Ben, Noel and I met up with Pat and Marty McNeil and we all went to the game together.  It was a great result, but not a very good atmosphere.  There wasn’t the usual singing and banter that I’ve witnessed at previous games, it might be because it wasn’t very close. Following the game, we done a tour of the town and I ended up with pains in my stomach with all the laughing.  Having two comedians in the pack is enough for any man – great day!

Sam in the meantime headed to Roscommon with the girls and spent the nigh with Mairead and their the two children Leon and Zara.  By all accounts, they had a takeaway and very relaxing evening drinking wine.

It was great to catch up again.

We do have some pictures of Leon and Zara.

Weekend in Ireland: update

March 4th, 2008 | Posted by Davey in Pre-Travel Posts - (0 Comments)

I did say that if you didn’t see any update posts while we were in Ireland, it was probably because I was too hungover and unable to string two words together.  Nothing could be further from the truth. I didn’t provide any updates because I was too chilled out and too lazy to sit down on my laptop and write – it didn’t take long to get back into the laid-back Irish way of life.

In Dublin on the Friday night we met up with the gang and headed into town for a meal – quite conservative for us as we normally head straight for the pub to get hammered. We had a lovely meal and the laughs were memorable.  Ben came with us to start but was so uncomfortable with an eye injury he sustained earlier in the day he had to head off to the hospital.  You missed a great night :-). Following several bottles of wine, we did meet up with him back at the house for several more bottles of wine.

In the picture left to right: Emma, Sam, me, Noel and Mairead. Below, Noel flat out after a hard nigh and Ben all patched up.

Website update

March 2nd, 2008 | Posted by Davey in Pre-Travel Posts - (0 Comments)

A big thank you to our friends’ Brian and Helen for designing us a new banner for our travel blog.  We love the new banner and they even incorporated an illustration of Lili, our much loved campervan.

We felt the previous banner was a little boring and needed the professional touch.  Are my ears really that big? :-)

Thank you again – we owe you a few beers!

We’re home

February 21st, 2008 | Posted by Davey in Pre-Travel Posts - (0 Comments)

You know you are definitely home when the cabbage, bacon and spuds come out. With mum being away for a few days Eilish treated us to one of Ireland’s favourite dishes.  She did slip up slightly by providing salty cabbage water, a heart attack in a mug.  Thank you Eilish the dinner was lovely.

We also had the opportunity to catch up with our niece Shauna who has grown up considerably since we saw her last.

I also managed to fit in a run today.  If you are familiar with the Roscommon area you will know Rathbrennan well where I managed a nine mile round trip.  Hopefully I’ll get in another tomorrow.

Really looking forward to meeting up with friends and our meal in Dublin tomorrow night.

Me scoffing my face, with dad at the same in the background.
