Poor Knights Islands
Just a couple of hours from Leigh but taking our time negotiating the winding roads to Poor Knights Islands, we were in constant awe of the landscape and the sheer beauty of pretty much nothing. You could drive for hours without seeing a single soul but never felt alone.
We headed straight for Tutukaka and a recommended dive shop to enquire about diving and the costs etc. The Knights Islands are reputed to have the best diving in NZ – the late Jacques Cousteau rated them among the top 10 diving spots in the world. Having enquired, we were a little taken aback by the costs, some $450 for the two of us for two dives. It is a lot of money and with it being out of season we decided against it. We have done a lot of diving on our trip so far and we would rather put this money towards some other activity.
Although we were a little disappointed leaving the dive shop, it was short lived when we found a beautiful camp spot (or lay by) just at the waters edge on the outskirts of town. Unlike Oz, you can camp anywhere as long as it is not sign posted. We sat for hours chatting to other campers and later Sam read while I went for a long swim around the bay.
Just a day or so in and we are really enjoying our trip and although a little colder than Oz there is much much more to see and do.
